In 1940, the tug D.T. Sheridan, en route from Virginia to Bangor with a barge of coal, encountered a severe storm. The vessel capsized, and the wreckage subsequently came ashore in Lobster Cove on Monhegan Island. Fortunately, all crew members were rescued by a local sailor.
